The birth of the modern Indian Merchant Navy occurred before independence from the United Kingdom, when in 1919 SS Loyalty sailed from India to Britain. Today, India ranks 15th in the world in terms of total DWT. India currently supplies around 12.8% of officers and around 14.5% of ratings to the world seafaring community. This is one of the highest of any country.
A merchant navy or merchant marine is the fleet of merchant vessels that are registered in a specific country. On merchant vessels, Seafarers of various ranks and sometimes members of maritime trade unions are required by the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) to carry Merchant Mariner's Documents.

« After joining the training program at the age of 17 Years with 10th or 12th certificate, you will qualify to become the captain or chief engineer of multi-core ships at the age of about 27 years.
« All qualification obtained in India are certified by government of India and these are recognized by every maritime nation in keeping with the International conversations made by IMO which is body of UNO.
« An officer holding Indian or foreign certificate can work on any ship of any nationality, thus increasing his job market.
« You can work on ships upto the age of 65 years.
« At the same time good opportunities will be available to change to marine related jobs onshore from the age of 35 years onwards.
